The 1981 season for the Ligier-Matra team can be considered one of the most successful in the team's history, with no fewer than seven podium finishes, including two victories at the Austrian and Canadian Grands Prix. These results saw Ligier finish fourth in the World Constructors' Championship. With the usual high quality of its products, Tameo Kits has developed a scale model kit of this car, meticulously reproducing its shape and choosing the version that won the Austrian Grand Prix with Jacques Laffite at the wheel. The kit is complemented by several photo-etched parts to provide maximum detail.

The Ligier JS17 that the team used during the 1981 season was a highly successful single-seater. Equipped with Matra V12 engines, marking the return of Matra engines to the French team, it achieved two victories at the Austrian and Canadian Grands Prix, both times with Jacques Laffite at the wheel. Designed by Gérard Ducarouge, the Ligier JS17 was powered by the Matra MS81 engine, a naturally aspirated engine at a time when turbocharged engines were becoming the norm. The Matra engine's higher fuel consumption necessitated a larger and longer fuel tank. Ducarouge also introduced adaptive hydropneumatic suspension to maximize ground effect, enabling the car to compete with the more powerful turbocharged rivals of the era. In the 1981 Austrian Grand Prix, the eleventh round of the F1 World Championship, held on the fast Österreichring circuit, Jacques Laffite achieved victory with his Ligier-Matra, in what was his fifth victory in a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
