In 1979, Lancia commissioned Daniel Audetto and his team to create a model capable of competing with the Porsche 935 for the World Manufacturers' Championship. The Lancia Beta Montecarlo was born, with a 1,425 cc turbocharged engine, allowing it to be classified within the "up to 2-liter" category (turbo engines had a 1.4 liter correction factor, equivalent to a "theoretical" displacement of 1,995 cc). This would take advantage of the fact that the World Championship was divided into two categories, with the final winner being the team with the highest points, regardless of category. At the end of the 1979 season, the Lancia took first place in the "up to 2-liter" category.
