The Lancia Delta Gr.A marked an entire era in its different evolutions. In 1990, the Gr.A regulations required the mounting of a 40 mm diameter restrictor on the intake to limit the passage of air to the engine and, therefore, limit the power of the cars. In order to counteract the decrease in power with a higher level of torque, Lancia decided to mount a 16V cylinder head on the 4-cylinder 2-liter engines of its Delta. The improvement that this meant is beyond doubt, and even Lancia's satellite team, the Jolly Club, recognised that this was approximately half a second per kilometre. The Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16V made its debut with victory at the 1989 San Remo rally, with a memorable comeback on the last day by Miki Biasion to win by just 5 seconds.
