When we talk about a Renault R5 Turbo and Walter Rorhl, the first thing that comes to mind is the Rally where this couple joined their paths... but no, it turns out that the combination took place on the circuits, on the occasion of the Turbo European Cup that Renault held in the mid-80s. Walter Röhrl participated in the first two races of 1981, being in the second one held at the Nürburgring where he came closest to victory, fighting with Ragnotti for first place until the mechanics of his R5 Turbo failed. This interesting decoration has been reproduced by Decalcas for use on the Tamiya kit of the Renault 5 Turbo, and is printed by Cartograf.

Paints recommended by Decalcas / SpotModel for this product:

In the early 1980s, with the aim of promoting its products and, above all, its turbo engine technology, it organised the Renault 5 Turbo Elf European Cup with races throughout Europe, occasionally supporting the Formula 1 Grands Prix. For four years, from its debut in April 1981 at Hockenheim to the final race in 1984 at Le Castellet in the south of France, the championship was characterised by close combat, excitement, the presence of famous drivers... and even suspicions of irregularities in the turbo's wastegate valves.

The model used for the competition was the Renault 5 Turbo with 170 hp, a mid-engine, and rear-wheel drive, to which the mandatory safety equipment had been added, such as roll cages, safety harnesses, fire extinguishers and circuit breakers. Over the years, the essence of these technical regulations barely changed, except for the change from Turbo 1 to Turbo 2 in the 1983 season (although they shared a grid that year), and the constant modifications to the turbo pressure adjustment locking system to prevent any cheating... although the suspicions among the various preparers and participants were never assuaged.

Almost 40 of the "chubby" R5 Turbos, with drivers from eight different nations, showed up for the first of twelve races held at the German Hockenheim circuit. Among them, a strong German representation with up to twelve drivers, something somewhat normal considering that in that first season three races were held in Germany: two at Hockenheim and one at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The most prominent figures were Wolfgang Schütz and Peter Oberndorfer, while stars such as Walter Röhrl and Harald Ertl would make an appearance at some of the events.

Before the start of the race, an unprecedented event occurs. “Where is the pre-start?” a tall man desperately asks the marshal in front of a closed iron gate as the impressive group of 40 “fat asses” prepares for the warm-up lap. The marshal stands firm, the gate closed, and the crowd favorite, Walter Röhrl, the author of the question, outside. The sold-out Motodrom crowd creates such a ruckus in the stands that the race director has no choice but to give in and reopen the gate to allow Walter Röhrl to join the race, albeit at the back of the pack. The race was won by the young Dutchman Boy Hayje, just ahead of Schütz and “Obi” Oberndorfer, but it was Walter Röhrl, who, with a murderous rage in his stomach, battled his way to 13th place, who received the crowd’s ovation after his performance.

In the second round of the season, held on the legendary Nordschleife, Walter Röhrl was once again present, and the race became a two-way duel between Röhrl and Ragnotti, very much at ease given the characteristics of the circuit. Both gave their all and fought for the lead until Röhrl's car failed mechanically. This would be Walter's last appearance in the R5 Turbo European Cup, as he would once again focus his efforts on the German and World Rally Championships.
