A Range Rover, driven by Frenchmen Alain Génestier, Joseph Terbiaut, and Jean Lemordant, was the fourth vehicle to cross the finish line, and the first in the standings. This was great publicity for Range Rover, as the car that won the 1979 Dakar Rally was a basic vehicle, almost like something you could buy at a dealership, and in fact, it even still had the factory-fitted Rostyle alloy wheels. The hood was painted matte black to reduce the glare from the African sun, but otherwise, the model also retained the simple factory white paintwork, over which sponsor decals were applied.
