The 1969 Spanish Grand Prix was held on 4 May at the Montjuïc Street Circuit in Barcelona, as the second round of the 1969 Formula One World Championship. The race, which saw an increasing presence of higher-positioned wings, was won by Jackie Stewart in his Matra-Ford Cosworth.
Ferrari also fitted Chris Amon's car with a rear wing over the rear wheels positioned very high. Starting from second on the grid, he took the lead of the Grand Prix thanks to the accidents suffered by the two Lotuses driven by Hill and Rindt. Unfortunately for Chris Amon and Ferrari, he had to retire on lap 56 due to engine problems.
The retirement of the two Lotus cars, caused by the failure of the rear wing supports, led the International Sporting Commission to intervene, changing the regulations during the second day of practice for the following race, the Monaco Grand Prix. Thus, high wings were definitively banned for safety reasons.
