The Mercedes Benz SSKL was a spectacular racing car, at a time when cars competed almost unchanged from the road versions. The SSKL was the final development of the fabulous sports cars that emerged from the merger carried out in 1926 between Daimler and Benz. The engine mounted in the SSKL had a displacement of 7.1 liters and a power of 300 hp, which thanks to its light chassis, allowed the SSKL to have an excellent weight-to-power ratio.
In racing, the history of the SSKL cannot be separated from that of the talented and legendary Rudi Caracciola, who even had to buy and maintain the car himself after the 1929 Wall Street crash led to the suspension of all sponsorship by Mercedes. But that did not prevent the SSKL/Caracciola tandem from achieving multiple victories. In fact, in 1931 Caracciola not only became the first non-Italian to win the legendary Mille Miglia, but he even managed to win all the races he entered.
