On 10 September, the tenth round of the 1972 season took place at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. At the Italian GP, Emerson Fittipaldi came close to winning his first Formula 1 world title. The Brazilian driver led the championship by 27 points over Stewart and Hulme thanks to four victories at the Spanish, Belgian, British and Austrian Grands Prix. From a technical point of view, the Lotus 72D used by "El Rato" had a very low centre of gravity and was very similar to the car that enabled Jochen Rindt to win the world title posthumously in 1970. To compensate for the widespread criticism following the death of the Austrian driver, Colin Chapman increased the weight of the car from 530 to 550 kg by using more resistant materials. However, Lotus still feared that he would end up in the clutches of the Italian justice system after the black weekend two years earlier, so it entered Emerson Fittipaldi in the race under the banner of the World Wide Racing team. Half an hour before the start, Lotus technicians detected a fuel leak in the cockpit of Fittipaldi's car, which put the Brazilian driver's participation in doubt, but the mechanics worked a miracle: in twenty minutes they dried everything and changed the fuel tank. Emerson Fittipaldi thus claimed his sixth career victory in front of the Monza crowd, but also the drivers' title with two races to go. The driver from Sao Paulo was also the first Brazilian champion and, at 25 years of age, at that time became the youngest world champion in the history of Formula 1.
