Following Jackie Stewart's victory in the opening race of the 1966 Formula One World Championship season in Monaco, the second race, the Belgian Grand Prix, took place on 12 June at the Spa Francorchamps circuit. This event also saw the participation of Lorenzo Bandini in a Ferrari 246 F166.

The race started under a rain-threatening sky, and Surtees immediately took the lead at the start. But halfway through the first lap, near the Burnenville area, the field encountered a real storm and a track flooded with water. The British Ferrari driver managed to get through the area, but behind him Bonnier, Spence, Siffert and Hulme ended up off the track, while Rindt, after a terrifying spin at the "Masta" chicane, managed to avoid the barriers and continued the race. Of the 18 cars that started, only seven crossed the finish line on the first lap. The race ended with victory for Surtees, who scored his third hat trick of his career, sharing the podium with Jochen Rindt and Lorenzo Bandini. Brabham and Ginther also scored points.

Curiously, after this race John Surtees left the Ferrari team, after Ferrari did not include him among the drivers who would participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Feeling betrayed, and not having found the support of Enzo Ferrari either, Surtees headed to the Cooper team to take Ginther's seat, achieving victory for his new team in the Mexican Grand Prix, the last race of the season.
