Among all the cases recorded throughout naval history, that of the Bounty is undoubtedly the most notable example of rebellion, involving the entire crew of a warship on the high seas. The commander of the ship and the expedition was William Bligh. In April 1789 the ship had already completed the first part of its mission and was sailing downwind with its precious cargo when, suddenly, the crew mutinied. They were instigated and led by Fletcher Christian, the executive officer, who disagreed with the captain. Bligh, along with 17 loyal crew members, was set adrift in an open boat 30 miles off Tofua, a volcanic island in the kingdom of Tonga. Once assembled, the boat measures approximately 78 cm long, 15 cm wide and 65 cm high.
