During the early years of McLaren's existence, the brand was characterized by the production of customer-oriented models. A prime example was the slender, tubular-framed McLaren-Elva Mark 1, later renamed the McLaren M1A. The first units left the team's workshops at Colnbrook, Berkshire, England, in the autumn of 1964.

Available with a variety of engine options, including the Cobra-derived 289-cubic-inch Ford and the ubiquitous small-block Chevrolet, the M1A soon became one of the most widely used vehicles in short- and medium-distance sports car racing in both Europe and the United States. Major motorsport figures such as Graham Hill, Chris Amon, Ludwig Heimrath, and Bruce McLaren himself all achieved great success at the wheel of various McLaren M1A units.

In 1966, the Mark 1 design was further refined, giving rise to the evolved Mark 2, also known as the M1B. This new car retained much of the M1A's architecture, notably its double wishbones with coil-sprung suspension, dual-circuit Girling brakes, and Hewland LG400 four-speed gearbox, but featured a revised chassis that was 20% stiffer than the M1A's. The fiberglass body, designed by Michael Turner, was also modified, giving the car a noticeably more robust appearance. A one-inch increase in track width allowed the fitment of wider magnesium wheels.

A total of 28 customer M1Bs were built, along with three factory-produced cars. One of these cars saw Bruce McLaren finish third in the inaugural 1966 Can-Am Challenge Cup.
