The 1970 Le Mans race was a race of attrition. Only 7 of the 51 participants reached the finish line. Five of the seven registered Porsche 917s retired, but the remaining two crossed the finish line first and second. The guys from Zuffenhausen finally got their long-awaited win on the Sarthe circuit. The winners: Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood. They started the race conservatively, successfully surviving heavy rain and other adversity and won by a five-lap margin over Gerard Larrousse and Willi Kauhsen.
As a curiosity, after 27 years as a Porsche driver, and while they were traveling for his participation in Le Mans, Hans Herrmann promised his wife that he would retire if he won... and at the end of the race he kept his word. He then confessed that he had started thinking about withdrawal some time ago. "It was clear to me that I would retire at the end of 1970, but I had not told anyone."
