The United States Formula 1 Grand Prix, the penultimate round of the 1969 season, was held at the Watkins Glen circuit. With Jackie Stewart already mathematically crowned champion, some drivers decided not to attend the event and compete in other championships. In the case of the Ferrari team, only one car was registered under the North American Racing Team flag, and it would be driven by the Mexican Pedro Rodríguez. The 312 F1 unit was still equipped with the V12 engine characterized by the location of the exhausts in the central part of the V of the cylinder banks, while the intake was on the outside. Qualifying was disappointing, achieving 12th position, although later in the race Rodríguez's immense talent allowed him to take the car to the points, finishing in 5th position, despite not being able to complete the planned 108 laps.
