The ban on moving parts forced Shadow to completely redesign its Mk1 prototype, doing away with both the aero-brake system and the elements to bring air to the rear radiators. The prototype's long, sleek bodywork is gone, and in place of the extendable tail is a huge rear wing that houses the radiators - which were relocated during the season due to a technicality in the regulations - and are located within the wing's own aerofoil, with the leading edge cut away to allow airflow through.

As with the prototype, little attention was paid to legroom, as the driver originally needed to spread his feet to control the accelerator with his right foot and brake with his left, while a hand control operated the clutch. The engine used was the 427 cubic inches Chevrolet V8 (7 litres), and contrary to appearances, the two conical tubes next to the engine inlets were not for intake, but rather supplied cold air to the rear brakes.

As for the tiny tyres seen on the prototype, Firestone ultimately did not make the rear tyres, so a dual-tube setup was used instead, mounting two modern Formula 1 tyres per wheel. The front tyres used were the same as those on the 6-wheel Tyrrell P34, as they are very similar in size.

Despite their efforts, success eluded for a time, as this car only took part in three races, retiring in the first two due to overheating problems and barely managing to finish the third.
