At the 1981 Canadian Grand Prix, Gilles Villeneuve managed to lead for three laps without visibility, giving rise to one of those mythical and heroic moments in Formula 1 history. After contact, the front wing of the number 27 Ferrari seized. It did damage, but instead of detaching itself from the car the wing stayed in a totally anomalous oblique position blocking the view of Villeneuve, who managed to finish in third place anyway. Heroes are not created by chance, and for three laps and on a sodden track, he dominated his Ferrari unbelievably until lap 57 when the wing, after the enormous stress it was subjected to, detached. Visibility was there again, but driving the car in the rain without wings was next to impossible. The most vivid photograph of the 1981 World Championship is that of the “Aviator” (Gilles' nickname) masterfully and incredibly driving the Ferrari as only he knows how to do it.
