The 1987 Monte Carlo Rally was the first of the Group A era, and Ford was still unsure which car to compete with. In the Monte Carlo rally Ford entered a Sierra 4X4 for Stig Blomqvist, while Kalle Grundel went out with a rear-wheel drive RS Cosworth. With a rally marked by snow, the balance was clearly tilted towards the 4x4, finishing the event in fourth place before the car was excluded due to a problem with its homologation. In the second event held in Sweden, the two Ford units on the starting line were 4x4s, with Stig Blomqvist finishing 6th overall.
