The expectations of the Scuderia Ferrari after its good results in 1990 were not met in 1991, with the Ferrari 643 being slower than expected compared to the McLaren or the Williams. At the Japanese Grand Prix held at Suzuka Alain Prost finished in fourth position, while Jean Alesi abandoned on the first lap wrapped in a smoke screen. But the surprise came after the Grand Prix, when Alain Prost was fired from Ferrari after a statement comparing his car with a "truck", which was not liked within the team.
