Aston Martin achieved great success among post-war grand tourers starting with the introduction of the beautiful DB2-4 in 1953, but it was the arrival of the DB4 in the late 1950s that really catapulted the brand to the fore level of brands such as Ferrari and Jaguar. The last creation of Sir David Brown (from which many Aston Martin models of the time take their initials), it was introduced in 1963 as the Aston Martin DB5. The DB5 was the culmination of all the development and constant improvements made over the DB4.

The main external differences from the V-Series DB4 were the covered headlamps, first seen on Zagato's short-wheelbase DB4GT, and dual fuel filler caps on both rear wings. But while they were outwardly similar, the DB5's main improvement was found under its beautiful bodywork. And this was its engine, with a six-cylinder light alloy block designed by Tadek Marek, where the displacement had been increased from 3.7 to 4.0 liters. Powered by triple SU carburettors, it delivered 282bhp to the rear wheels via a fully synchronized ZF five-speed manual gearbox. Its suspension, which used coil springs at all four wheels, along with its disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering, was inspired by Aston Martin's racing sports cars of the time.

In addition, its luxury and comfort have also been upgraded, with power windows, reclining seats, wool carpets and a fully leather-wrapped cabin. Without a doubt, the DB5 was the most luxurious, refined and comfortable grand tourer of the 1960s.

Aston Martin built 180 left-hand drive DB5s, identified by the letter “L” in their chassis number instead of a R". Right-hand drive, there were approximately 879 units produced.
