In 1986 Porsche created the Porsche 944 Turbo Cup in Germany and the 944 Challenge in Canada. The first race of the 944 Turbo Cup was held on April 27, 1986 at the Nürburgring GP track, which had been built just two years earlier. It was a truly spectacular event, with more than 30 identical cars fighting side by side.
Although the roll cage added weight, on the other hand it was removed with the removal of the anti-gravel underlayment, the power windows and other unnecessary electrical items, the rear seats, using lighter mirrors, a magnesium intake manifold, etc. As far as the steering is concerned, the power steering was eliminated, and a quick-ratio steering rack was fitted. The 1986 configuration kept the same power as the street version, 220 hp, as well as the same limited slip differential.
The 944 Turbo Cups from the 1987 season were equipped with new larger KKK turbochargers, producing 250 hp. In addition to the increased engine power, the 1987 Cup cars had many other improvements. The 1987 model year featured wider axles and ABS. In addition, they received the front brakes from the Porsche 928 S4. The new Cup suspension had height-adjustable front struts and stiffer springs, and coil springs were mounted in the rear as well as torsion bars. The cars also had larger oil pans made of magnesium.
Roland Asch was the great dominator of the German Turbo Cup, winning the championship 3 years in a row, in 1987, 1988 and 1989, before the Cup switched to using the Porsche 911. His dominance was such that in 1988 he came to win 9 of the 10 championship races, and in 1989 6 of the 9 races.
