With the title already in the hands of Patrick Snijers, the Condroz rally, the last round of the Belgian rally championship, was going to be the scene of the fight for honor between Droogmans and Snijers with their respective Porsche 911 SC RS Gr. B. Their fight was cut short because, in the eighth stage, the engine of Patrick Snijers' Porsche exploded, from which point Droogmans only had to secure his solid leadership position until the end, which he did with authority, masterfully avoiding all the obstacles. obstacles of the route while enthusing the large audience present on the route.
Behind these two men were Guy Colsoul and Marc Surer. The Swiss driver was present on board in a Renault 5 Turbo, although unfortunately he retired early due to a broken camshaft. The same mishap would later happen to the Swede Walfridsson, who had an identical car. After the retirement of Snijers and Surer, Guy Colsoul consolidated his position in second place, although an untimely puncture made him fall back in the peloton, and the Landen driver had to deploy all his talent to come back and overtake Jean-Louis Dumont who, aboard his small R5 Turbo, he gave an excellent performance. The leading trio did not change until the end of the rally.
But without a doubt, the man of the weekend was José Lareppe, Belgian champion of Gr. A, who, driving his Opel Ascona always at the limit, was ahead of several Gr. B while he was in the race. His retirement benefited the talented Thierry Reginster (disqualified after verification for a non-compliant gearbox), always very spectacular and fast, who placed his Opel Kadett between the two Ascona 400s of Vandermaesen and Jean Dechesnes. Also notable was the performance of Jean-Pierre Vandewauver, new champion of Gr. N, who did everything possible to “break” his car, delighting the spectators… although luckily he did not succeed. The victory in Group A went to Ivan Viaeme.
