The 1976 rally season ended on a very successful note for the Lancia Stratos, but the future looked a bit more complicated for Lancia. During 1976, the FIA had announced changes to its Annex J for Groups 2 and 4. The freedom to homologate such useful elements as the multi-valve cylinder head, dry sump lubrication or reinforced suspensions by building only 100 units, instead of fitting them to production cars, was coming to an end. For circuit racing, these modifications had to be applied for the 1977 season, but for rallying these modifications could continue to be used until the end of that year. This meant that the Stratos would lose some of its competitiveness within twelve months.
However, the 1977 season began with another demonstration of the Stratos' rally prowess, when Sandro Munari won the Monte Carlo Rally for the third time in succession, finishing two minutes ahead of Andruet's Fiat 131 Abarth. His lead had grown to over four minutes, but towards the final stage his alternator failed and he had to drive many of the night stages with only two headlights. Another strong result for the Stratos in that rally was achieved by Christine Dacremont who finished sixth overall in a Stratos sponsored by Esso and Aseptogyl, also winning the Ladies' Cup.
