The launch of the Porsche 924 was quite a challenge for Porsche, since it meant a total break with its classic rear-engine configuration. In addition, the fact of using an engine sourced from Audi did not help either, and there were many who did not consider the 924 as a true Porsche. For this reason, it was decided that the 924 would participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans to enhance its sporty image.
In 1980, 3 vehicles were put on the track, using a two-liter four-cylinder turbo engine, and the result was fantastic. Nothing less than a sixth position overall with the car driven by Jürgen Barth and Manfred Schurti, while the other two units finished in 12 and 13 positions after having problems with one of the pistons in their engines in the final hours.
In 1981, the 924 would participate again, but with a secret under the hood in the unit with the number #1. In the autumn of that same year, the second Porsche with a transverse front engine, the 944, would be launched, and the 924 number #1 would use the 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine of the 944 at Le Mans, being entered for it in the GTP category. The team's second unit would use the 924 with the same engine used in 1980, that is, it would be a GTR. After some complex tests, with many breakages of the new engine, it was a complete surprise for the team that on the day of the race the 924 GTP completed the race without the slightest problem, although helped by the decision to reduce the turbo pressure and limit the maximum speed for the race. The result was once again spectacular, seventh overall position for the #1 car of Walter Rorhl and Jürgen Barth, with 7 more laps than in 1980, and the 2-litre 924 GTR finishing in 11th position, although their times were similar to those of the GTP unit.
