The Francois Delecour’s favorite rally car, who said about the 306 Maxi:
The best car for me was the Peugeot 306 Maxi, mainly because the sound of the engine was so fantastic. It was also a very light and powerful car with beautiful looks. Yet whilst the engine was so well sorted and the car was very efficient it was always difficult to drive. I have some great memories of driving this car in the French Championship but also from the World Championship events we did in Corsica, Catalonia and San Remo. Because the car was only two wheel-drive it was impossible to get any real traction on gravel but on the asphalt, it was always a great challenge to beat the World Rally Cars. In Corsica 1998 it rained a lot yet I still managed to finish second overall, behind Colin McRae. Most of the rally people could not believe that the Peugeot was going so fast in wet conditions.
When Citroën came to World Championship rallies with their Xsara kit car it was at the top, they had definitely done more development than us. I think if Peugeot has continued developing the 306 then it would have been possible to win some asphalt WRC rallies like Citroën did in 1999.
