The Ferrari 512 M, chassis number 1040, entered by the Penske Team, had no luck at the 1971 Le Mans 24 Hours. After a disappointing first practice session, Mark Donohue spent Thursday making a lot of changes, testing shock absorbers, anti-roll bars and tires. Although he could not get to disturb the Porsche 917L, he ended up setting the best time among all the Ferrari 512 with a 3'18 ”5.
Donohue made a good start to the race behind the three 917 Ls. During its first refueling the Ferrari 512 M lost time to the Porsches, since it could not mount the same "Indy" system usual in their races in the USA, although Donohue stayed behind the wheel. After the first hour of the race, Donohue is 35 seconds off the lead. When Larrousse's Porsche had to stop in the pits, the Ferrari was in 3rd place, which at the end of the second hour was 1'42'' behind the leader. After the second refueling, now with Hobbs at the wheel, the Ferrari loses third position before the return of the Porsche/Martini at the beginning of the third hour, which it will recover shortly after thanks to the first problems of Siffert-Bell, gaining another place when Elford -Larrousse had to change a tire. At the end of the fourth hour, Donohue was in second place, more than 2' behind the leading Porsche, Rodríguez's.
But unfortunately at 8:14 pm the Ferrari 512M entered the pits, where a lengthy under-the-hood inspection began. 40 minutes later, and after completing only 73 laps, the beautiful Ferrari withdrew to applause with a broken engine.
