The Safari rally is an atypical race, different from all the others that make up the world rally championship. Without a doubt, it can be considered the toughest rally in the championship, with a format that is more similar to that of a raid than to that of a conventional rally. The lack of timed sections, with the competition taking place on open roads, the harsh weather conditions and the presence of multiple obstacles such as other vehicles, animals and people, make the Safari rally a different event.
In 1972, the Safari rally scored for the first time in the international championship for brands, which is why several brands entered their best drivers in the event. Hannu Mikkola was the brilliant winner of the race, almost 30 minutes ahead of Sobies
