The American Bill Sterling, accompanied by his co-driver Royal, was one of the protagonists of the first edition of the Pan-American Race held in 1950. Despite what was indicated in the regulations, his Cadillac had been remarkably prepared, and was capable of reaching speeds averages well above the maximum declared by the manufacturer. He won the first and third stages, and was in contention for victory until the eighth stage, where he had to retire due to a mechanical failure.
