The 1985 RAC rally was the debut of the Lancia Delta S4 in the World Rally Championship. Alen and Toivonen were the drivers selected to take on their Group B rivals. To everyone's surprise - and that includes Cesare Fiorio and most of the Abarth team - the two Delta S4s not only finished the rally, but took first and second places. In fact, Alen led from the start until he was overtaken by Mikkola's Audi Quattro E2 in Wales. But when Mikkola dropped out, Alen took the lead and only lost it on the final night when he hit a ditch and had to be pulled out by fellow Finn Juha Kankkunen, who was driving for Toyota. That cost Alen five minutes. Toivonen hadn't been on his heels for most of the rally, plus he'd had some electrical issues that set him back even further, but he was still close enough to take advantage of Alen's last-minute mistake and take the win. It may be that Lancia's victory was also possible due to the abandonment of two official Audis, three official Peugeots and a Metro 6R4, but it is also true that it achieved a record by finishing the rally with its two cars, in what was a new car that everyone expected it to fail.
