Between 1949 and 1980, a total of 330,281 Volkswagen Käfer Cabriolets were produced, 18,511 of which were version 1303. On January 18, 1980, the last Käfer Cabriolet rolled off the Karmann production line in the German town of Osnabrück.
The mounted engine was the four-cylinder boxer, air-cooled, with 1,570 cm³ and 50 hp, with a 4-speed manual gearbox. The maximum speed it reached was 130 km/h, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 20 seconds.
In 1976, when the VW 1303 Cabriolet was introduced, only two convertibles were presented in the whole year on the market, as the growing debates about safety even raise the option of banning convertibles. The Cabriolet version also remained the only option for the Super Beetle, introduced in 1972, since production of the sedan ceased in 1975.
