One of the championships that began to arouse the most interest in the brands in the mid-90s was the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship, especially in the Japanese brands, logical considering the commercial interest of the Japanese manufacturers in those markets. The main stars of the 1995 season were Mitsubishi drivers Kenneth Eriksson and Tommi Mäkinen. Armed with a highly efficient machine, the Lancer Evolution III Gr.A, Eriksson took the title in 1995, helping either Makinen or Vatanen to ensure that Mitsubishi also won the manufacturers' title.
