The 1991 Monte Carlo Rally was a rather dry edition, which at first seemed to favor the Toyota Célica ST165 gr.A. On January 24 the concentration routes began, and two days later, the real race. Sainz began by distancing the Lancias from Biasion and Saby, while Auriol was out of the race due to a series of mysterious electrical problems.
But the revelation came from the hand of a little known outside his country Francois Delecour, who after two seasons aboard a Peugeot 309 GTI, was signed by Ford to race some World Rally championship events. At the end of the Qualifying Stage, he had overtaken all the Lancias and allowed himself to threaten the reigning world champion. Before everyone's astonished gaze, during the Common Stage the Frenchman continued to scratch seconds off the initial advantage of Carlos Sainz until he was only 9 seconds behind. And in the first stage of the final day, the famous “Turini night”, Delecour took the lead, and although Sainz initially hit back, the French rider managed to open a significant gap thanks to terrain he knew by heart. At the start of the last loop, Sainz was throwing in the towel, preferring to secure second place… but the incredible happened. In the last stage, the Ford suffered problems with the fixing of a wheel on the rear axle, suffering a puncture and going off the road, which relegated Delecour to third place. Little consolation for what was to be a spectacular debut with the Ford Sierra.
The other two Ford Sierras from the works team had a much more subdued performance, with Malcon Wilson reaching seventh place after suffering some brake problems, and Alessandro Fiorio finishing in tenth position.
