From the very beginning, the racing version proved to be a formidable racing car. In the 1995 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, McLaren participates with seven units of the F1 GTR... achieving absolute victory!! In addition, another four of the seven McLarens manage to reach the finish line, finishing in the top five! McLaren's success is more than remarkable given that the F1 GTRs have hardly been modified from the road car for the race. The body is made of carbon fiber, and the engine, from BMW, is a V12 with 6,000 cm3 and 640 hp.
The #59 McLaren takes victory, and the #51, sponsored by Harrods and driven by Dereck Bell, his son Justin and Andy Wallace, finishes the race in third place, completing McLaren's success.
In short, first participation and outright victory, first place in GT, first victory for a BMW engine, first victory for a Japanese and Finnish driver... McLaren passes the legend of the 24 Hours of Le Mans among the cars that win this famous race in his first participation. Something available to very few!
