After its homologation, in 1996 the Porsche 911 GT1 burst onto the GT World Championship scene, even finishing second and third in the 1996 24 Hours of Le Mans, but the successes were not repeated in the same way in 1997, with Mercedes-Benz as a great competitor with its CLK GTR. As a result, Porsche decided to substantially overhaul the GT1 for the 1998 season, paying special attention to aerodynamics.

Although it is true that the GT1 '98, as the evolution version was called, did not achieve any victory in the FIA GT Championship races against the might of Mercedes, it did take all the honours in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he achieved absolute victory. The GT1 '98, driven by Laurent Aiello, Allan McNish and Stéphane Ortelli, completed 351 laps to secure Porsche's 16th Le Mans win, with the second 911 GT1 '98 to follow, scoring a stupendous one-two.

In 1999, the GT1 was no longer raced as development of its successor was ongoing and the intention was to put it on the track in the 2000 season, but said car would never be raced. Of course, the development was not in vain, since some of its elements were used in the production model of the Porsche Carrera GT.
