1970 was a tragic year in the history of McLaren. On June 2 of that year, the pilot/owner of the team, Bruce McLaren, lost his life in an accident at the Goodwood Circuit (England) testing one of his cars designed for Can-Am, the McLaren M8D, leaving the team in a desperate situation. He was only 32 years old.
From that moment the team is under the direction of Teddy Meyer, and for the 1971 season the new M19 is designed, abandoning the design concept of the cigar-shaped cover. The M19 also had new suspension schemes, and its fuel tanks were installed on both sides of the cockpit to lower the centre of gravity, which also led to the mounting of a coke bottle-shaped cover.
The debut season, with the name M19A, was not easy, with only 10 points obtained in the whole season to finish sixth in the constructors' championship, but the following year, and with the sponsorship of Yardley, he managed to obtain relevant results, with up to 11 podium positions, and including a victory in the South African GP thanks to Denis Hulme. The M19 would still participate in some races of the 1973 Formula 1 Championship, with the name M19C, where its weight was further lightened, until it was replaced by the successful M23 starting in March at the South African Grand Prix held in the Kyalami circuit.
