In 1978 Porsche presented the new 911 SC, which was powered by a three-liter boxer engine that initially delivered 180 hp. To promote this new model, the factory team entered two duly prepared 911 SCs in the 1978 Safari Rally, a 5,000-kilometre event that took place in East Africa in that edition. Only 13 of the 72 entrants made it to the finish line, including the two Porsche 911 SCs, with Kenyan Vic Preston Jr. second and Björn Waldegård fourth.
The Porsche 911 SCs prepared by Porsche had an output of 250 hp and, despite 28 centimeters of ground clearance, long suspension travel, underbody protection and reinforced bodywork, they achieved more than respectable top speed of 210 km/h.
Despite being designed to withstand the strain of the Safari Rally, the car itself was relatively light, weighing in at around 1.180 kilograms, despite carrying a 35-gallon fuel tank, plus 4 gallons of water and 20 liters of oil on board.
