Without a doubt, of all the 2002s, the model that attracted the most attention was the spectacular Turbo, which also became the first mass-produced European car with a turbo engine. Power prevailed in this model, reaching 170 hp at 5,800 rpm, when the most powerful of the naturally aspirated 2002s gave "only" 130 hp with its 4-cylinder engine. The turbo engine used a KKK turbocharger that blew at 0.5 kg/cm2.
One of the things that most differentiated the Turbo from the rest of 2002 was the front spoiler and the wide wings mounted to accommodate the wider 185/70 tires on 13-inch rims. Other changes included better brakes, with ventilated front discs, stiffer suspension, and a limited-slip differential.
The Turbo was much quicker than its range brethren, with a top speed of 209 km/h, and 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 7.6 seconds, but it was also more difficult to drive. Its main handicap was the delay in the response time of the turbo, with performance even lower than the naturally aspirated models outside the narrow operating range of the turbo, which was noticeable with the standard four-speed gearbox. The appearance as an option of a 5-speed ZF gearbox allowed the engine to be kept in its ideal operating range more easily, apart from helping to reduce consumption, which was tremendously high.
To enlarge its legend, the word “turbo” was placed on the front spoiler, but written backwards, so that it could be correctly read by the rear-view mirror of the cars that preceded it. In just one year, between 1973 and 1974, a total of 1.672 examples were built.
