The 512 BB was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1976 as a substitute for the 365 GT4 / BB and remained in production until 1981, when it was replaced by the 512 BBi, a model in which the carburetors gave way to the fuel injection. A total of 929 units were manufactured in that period, with chassis numbers that began at 19,677 and ended at 38,487. The new denomination of the model was no longer as elaborate as in its predecessor, and broke with the tradition of Ferrari to baptize their cars with the cubicaje of a single cylinder. Instead, the formula used with the Dino series continued, that is, using the total displacement and the number of cylinders. Therefore, the name of the new model came from its 5-liter 12-cylinder engine. The acronym "BB" had the same meaning as before, "Berlinetta Bóxer".
