The Honda S2000 was first unveiled as a concept car at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show. The prototype was called the SSM. The production version was launched on 15 April 1999, coinciding with the company's 50th anniversary, and remained in production until 19 August 2009. The Honda S2000 is named in the tradition of the S500, S600 and S800 roadsters of the 1960s, where the "S" stood for "sporty" and the number is taken from the displacement of its two-litre engine.
The model naturally received various updates throughout its commercial life, including changes to the engine, gearbox, suspension, interior and exterior. The Honda S2000, with its naturally aspirated 2.0-litre DOHC-VTEC inline-4 engine developing 250 hp, stood out for its exceptional specific power of over 124 hp per litre, the highest at the time for a production car with a naturally aspirated engine. The engine position is also ideal, as it is mounted front-mid, just behind the front axle, achieving a 50/50 weight distribution.
The S2000 has since become a true modern classic car. In the JDM community and the wider automotive community, the most sought-after models are the special editions, such as the CR (Club Racer) launched in the US market, while the standard AP1 and AP2 models have also achieved collector's status.
