The Renault RE20 was the single-seater used by the Renault team in the 1980 season in the Formula 1 World Championship. The car was already designed under the ground effect concept by the engineers Francois Castaing and Michel Tétu. The engine used was the 1.5L turbocharged Renault Gordini EF1, which in the 1981 season produced 520bhp, which was about 50bhp more than the famous 3.0L Cosworth DFV V8 engine still used by a large number of teams, although it was somewhat below the power achieved by the new turbocharged engine used by Ferrari, which generated about 560 hp. During the season the engineers mainly focused on improving engine reliability, which was the RE20 biggest handicap. And since it was a French single-seater, it stands to reason that the tires used by the Renault were supplied by Michelin. The name RE also referred to the team's main sponsor, ELF, RE being the acronym for Renault ELF.
The team's drivers for the 1980 season were both of French nationality, with Jean-Pierre Jabouille and René Arnoux driving the RE20 in 1980, while in 1981 Jabouille was replaced by a young Alain Prost, who had made his debut in the Formula One with McLaren the previous season.
In the 1980 season the Renault RE20 achieved three Grand Prix victories. Arnoux won the races in Brazil and South Africa, while Jabouille was the winner of the Austrian Grand Prix.
