The 1962 World Championship was reserved for GT cars, so Enzo Ferrari told his chief engineer Giotto Bizarrini and Scaglietti's boss that he needed a small, light car based on the Berlinetta. Bizarrini went to work, strengthening the existing chassis as much as possible with the short 2,400mm wheelbase and moving the Colombo engine closer to the cabin, so that the heat it gave off had to escape through two (later three) vents. located on the sides. He improved the engine by increasing the size of the valves and the profile of the camshafts, as well as mounting new exhaust manifolds and, between the V of the twelve-cylinder engine, a battery of double-barrel Weber type 38 DCN carburettors that provided almost 300 hp.
The Commendatore himself had established the basic lines of the silhouette, with three conspicuous crescent-shaped openings in the nose that allowed the engine to breathe.
