The Gresini Racing team was founded in 1997 by two-time 125cc world champion Fausto Gresini, after the end of his racing career. In 2006 the team fielded Marco Melandri and Toni Elías, counting the team with Fortuna as main sponsor. That season the team achieved four victories, three for Melandri (Turkey, France and Australia) and one for Elías (Portugal), in a battle during the last laps with Valentino Rossi that lifted the public from their seats, entering the finish line with only 2 thousandths! of advantage. At the classification level in the Drivers' World Championship, Melandri finished in fourth position, while Elias did so in ninth. Both riders remained with the team in 2007, although they lost sponsorship from Fortuna due to the European Tobacco Regulations.
