It took almost five decades for Aston Martin to return to the international endurance racing scene, using the all-powerful DBR9 for this purpose. And there was no better way to do this than to team up with the experienced Prodrive, so successful not only in rallies with the Subaru Impreza but also at Le Mans with the Ferrari 550 Maranello, to entrust them with the construction of their new racing project. Prodrive began work on the GT1 version of the newly launched DB9 in 2003, which was to be ready for the 2005 season. On the mechanical side, the Aston Martin DBR9 used a 60° V12 engine with four valves per cylinder and a total displacement of 5993 cc, capable of developing around 635 hp and 746 Nm of torque with the corresponding 31.2 mm air restrictors required by regulation.

Success was immediate, with the car taking victory in the GT1 class (and fourth overall) on its debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring, followed by first place in the GT1 championship of the Le Mans Series and, finally, victory in the GT1 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2007, which it was able to repeat the following year under the legendary colours of Gulf Racing.
