The Porsche brand, and its ambitious head of development Ferdinand Piéch, had finally managed to win at Le Mans in 1970. Along with the win, Porsche also dominated the world sports car championship with the revised version of the 917K.
The following year, Porsche returned to Le Mans in full force. Of the 49 participants, 33 were vehicles from the Zuffenhausen brand, including three 917Ks, three 917LHs and the new and unique 917/20.
Always on the lookout for new ideas and technologies to reduce weight, Porsche had built a prototype with a magnesium tubular chassis, dressed it in Martini colors, and put two drivers at the controls who were not only extremely fast, but also particularly kind to the vehicle. These drivers were Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep, and driving the number 22 Porsche 917K they came to the finish line as winners after completing a whopping 397 laps. This meant setting the record for the distance traveled with 5,335.313 kilometers, a record that had to wait 39 years for it to be broken by an Audi R15 TDI in 2010.
To round off Porsche's success in 1971, another Porsche 917K, driven by Herbert Müller and Richard Attwood, finished the race in second place.
