The change in the regulations of the F1 World Championship for the 1954 season, where the engines began to have a displacement of 2.5 liters, convinced Gianni Lancia to return his brand after spending two years in the 2 liters Formula 2. The study and production of the new car was entrusted to Vittorio Jano.
The rivals to beat were Ferrari, which had just won the previous championships in 1952 and 1953 and presented an evolution of its F2 models, and Mercedes, which also returned to the highest level with its formidable W196, so Lancia needed to create a revolutionary car. The Lancia D50 certainly was, with its lateral fuel tanks (for better mass centering), its semi-transported engine partially forming part of the chassis for maximum weight reduction, and its angled engine mount to allow the drive axle to transmission will pass through the driver's side and thus be able to reduce the height of the car. All these innovations required a lot of development time, and in 1954 the car only participated in the last GP of the 1954 Championship in Barcelona, at the Pedralbes circuit.
