When Carlos Sainz decided on the Ford Spain team for the 1987 season, it was mainly because this allowed him to make the leap to the world championship and carry out a small race program, which began at the Portugal rally, where he became the first rookie in lead the race in its first stage, and continued with the Tour de Corse, where he managed to finish in a more than creditable seventh place for a rookie, although he knew it was a little while after riding in fourth position before problems with the steering, an oil leakage from the turbo, a driveshaft and a ball joint will delay the last day. Carlos Sainz's World Cup program in 1987 would be completed with the RAC rally, where he finished in eighth position.
