The 1978 season saw significant progress made in the field of aerodynamics and, to challenge Lotus, Forghieri realized he had to follow suit and design a ground effect car for 1979. The 312T4, unveiled at the Grand 1979 South African Award, was closely based on the 312T3. But this starting point meant having several restrictions from an aerodynamic point of view, since the T series had never been designed taking into account ground effect. The 312T4 monocoque was designed to be as narrow as possible to make the most of ground effect, but the width of the 12-cylinder boxer engine was a limitation.
Despite this, the 312T4 won 6 races in 1979, with three wins for Villeneuve and three for Scheckter, which combined with other good results allowed Ferrari to win its fourth constructors' championship in five seasons and Scheckter to win his only drivers championship.
Scheckter was gifted the 312T4 that he drove to win his championship title after the new 312T5 was ready to debut in Argentina in 1980. He still owns it, and in fact used it at the 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix weekend on the occasion of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Formula One, where all living Formula One World Champions were present (except Nelson Piquet and Kimi Räikkönen).
