First released in 2011, we were thrilled to hear about the re-edition of the incredible Yamaha FZR750R OW01 Tamiya kit, a true street-legal superbike. This kit features a two-piece, upper and lower clear plastic fairing, just like the real bike. Its DOHC inline-4 engine and all its ancillary components, such as the carburetors and radiators, have been accurately reproduced, including much of the wiring, which can be recreated with the included vinyl tubing. Even the tire tread pattern is precisely sculpted, enhancing the appearance of the assembled model. We can't wait to get our hands on it and enjoy building it!

The 1989 Yamaha FZR750R was, technically, one of the most coveted motorcycles of the 1990s among lovers of limited-run sportbikes. The existence of the OW01 was directly born out of the growing popularity of the World Superbike Championship, where, in view of homologation and subsequent use in the championship, manufacturers would release special versions of their road bikes with specifications specifically designed for the track. Perhaps the most famous of these limited-edition "homologation specials" is Honda's iconic RC30, but Yamaha's response with the launch of the FZR750R, better known as the OW01, in 1989, is even more rare and exotic, as only 500 units were manufactured.
The Yamaha FZR750R OW01 was a very special motorcycle, with a selection of parts that looked like something straight from a racing accessories website. In this regard, the Showa forks and the Öhlins rear shock absorber stand out. For the engine, they opted for a brand-new unit with an ultra-short stroke, titanium connecting rods, and a five-valve cylinder head with straight-pull carburettors that, although awkward for the street, were ideal for the track. In terms of power, the engine developed 121 hp with a rev limit of 14,000 rpm. The narrow power band was enhanced with a valve in the exhaust system that would later become popular for use on the FZR1000: the famous "Exup." Thanks to the use of a close-ratio gearbox and the factory race kit, the OW01 could complete the 400 meters from a standing start in 11.20 seconds and reach a top speed of 257 km/h.
At the chassis level, Yamaha made the OW01's twin-spar aluminium frame from a higher-grade aluminium alloy than its standard models, and to prioritize lightness, an aluminium fuel tank was fitted instead of steel.
With a price tag in the late 1980s equivalent of around €14,000, plus a few thousand euros extra for race kit, the OW01 was easily one of the most expensive bikes on the market in 1989.
