The Toyota Celica Turbo 4WD Gr.A debuted at the 1992 Monte Carlo Rally, and there it received a sovereign refresher from the Lancia Delta HF Integrale. The root of this defeat had to be found in the own conception of the car: the Celica started from the base of a car designed for the street and not for rallies. From there his ills were born when facing him in a rally stage. The door to success lay through the ability of the Toyota Team Europe engineers and its drivers to modify it from top to bottom and convert it into a true race-winning machine. The work was hard, constant and intense for two uninterrupted years. This delivery led to a car equipped with complex mechanical and electronic technology, which took over every corner of the Toyota Celica Gr.A, thus masking its original limitations. Aluminium, Kevlar, titanium, magnesium and carbon fiber left its weight within the regulated limit of 1,200 kg, with any superfluous element disappearing, and where only the driving position and the lines of the bodywork were recognizable. The work on the suspensions was one of the workhorses. After not a few headaches, Carlos Sainz managed to find the right direction at the end of the 1992 season, before the Rally Catalunya. To do this, they used relatively soft springs, with a progressive effect instead of a linear one, which gave the Toyota the desired efficiency. However, the Celica Turbo 4WD also had two solid arguments that helped disguise its capricious stability. In the first place, it had an exceptional engine - there was talk of more than 380 CV - which, although initially lacking in elasticity, gradually improved in response thanks to the excellent work of engineer Rossmann, managing to expand its range of use. Motor skills were also at a high level. Transmission development never stopped, employing a viscous centre differential with variable torque split to the other two mechanical differentials. His seven victories in the 1993 World Rally Championship in terrains as diverse as Sweden, Monte Carlo and Kenya allowed the Toyota Team Europe team to not only win the Drivers' World Championship with Juha Kankkunen, but also win the Manufacturers' Championship for the first time in its history.
