Paints recommended by Tamiya / SpotModel for this product:
Introduced in 1999, the Porsche 911 996 GT3 is considered by many experts to be the spiritual successor to the original 1973 Carrera RS. Porsche production was initially limited to the number of units needed to meet FIA homologation requirements for that the 911 could compete in the GT3 category. For this reason, part of the production run of this first batch of the 996 GT3 was completed by the Porsche Motorsport Division in Weissach, which also undertook its development. The 911 GT3 would go on to become one of Porsche's most successful and prolific GT racing cars.
The road-going Porsche 996 GT3s rode a development of the naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine from the Le Mans-winning GT1, keeping the titanium connecting rods in even their dry sump system. Not only was it a powerful engine with 360 hp that allowed the GT3 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in around 4.7 seconds, but it also had a wide range of response at any rev range. To make the GT3 suitable for track use, the brakes, suspension and wheels were upgraded to cope with the substantial increase in performance, while downforce was improved with a larger front air dam and specific rear wing. In addition, a major slimming-down was carried out, removing the rear seats, rear speakers, moonroof, air conditioning (although the latter could be ordered as an option) and most of the soundproofing.
In total, Porsche built 1.858 Porsche 996 GT3s, of which 308 were right-hand drive.
