In mid-1983, as part of the continuous development of the brand's racing department, Opel officially announced its move to Group B with its Manta 400 model, becoming the successor to the successful Group 4 Ascona 400, a model with which Walter Röhrl won the 1982 World Rally Championship. The Manta 400 was homologated for Group B on May 1, 1983, and was powered by the same 2.4-liter engine created by Cosworth for the Ascona 400, and which had been developed at from the Opel Record diesel engine block. However, its configuration as a rear-wheel drive vehicle would make it obsolete almost instantly, with no options to defend itself against the competition with four-wheel drive or against the larger budgets invested by the rest of the important manufacturers.
Unlike the Ascona 400, the Manta made extensive use of Kevlar body panels. The front panel, front wings, hood, doors, rear wings, trunk lid, spoiler, and even the headlight brackets were made of this lightweight material, saving up to a total of 80 kg. In addition, its longer wheelbase and lower height helped distribute the weight even better, something to which an engine position set back by about six cm also contributed. With all these changes and other additional improvements, the Manta 400 was faster and more competitive than its predecessor, but unfortunately it was not enough. In its debut season in 1983, the Manta was instantly overtaken by its rivals, and could only watch the fight between Audi and Lancia from a distance, its most relevant result in 1983 being a third place in the RAC Rally in the capable hands by Jimmy McRae.
Where the Manta 400 did manage to be a competitor to take into account was in the National Championships, as in the case of the British, Irish and German Championships, where local star drivers such as Jimmy McRae, Russell Brookes, Austin McHale and Erwin Weber won some of their titles driving the Open Manta. The first victory for the Manta 400 was achieved by Erwin Weber in the June Hessen Rally in 1983.
